I was with a group of students at the University of Manchester yesterday in a training session on careers and employability. One of the recurring questions was "how do I write a good CV?" Some students even muted the idea of hiring CV writers to script their CV. My experience & advice is that never hire anyone to write your CV because no one knows you better than YOU! Students' primary concern here should be to concentrate efforts on finding relevant work experience to complement their academic theoretical knowledge- from internships, placements, industrial attachments, volunteering, holiday jobs, etc.- most especially in roles related to their chosen future "job role". This is where 95% of undergrads miss it: they don't fully understand that having some work experience, especially and strategically, in the relevant roles before graduating would far much more benefit them when they start writing CVs & applying for jobs than without work experience, but with an academic degree only. Don't struggle more than necessary! ACT! Imagine if you were a BSc Accounting student, you look for some SME ventures in your community and offer to balance their books over a period. Those would be incredibly practical experiences for CV! Adebayo A.?Kayode Abass?Hammed Kayode Alabi?
This is quite true. A truth I wish I knew during my undergraduate days. If I could wind back the hands of time, I'll look forward to each holiday and strike period because I know my experience will get richer and my resume, better. These days when I see undergraduates sitting around during holidays, I itch to ram knocks of sense into their head. Thanks for the great post.

Great to hear this, Hammed Kayode Alabi. Fire on, bros!
Ita John, Ph.D. thank you for the mention. I constantly remind my protégés of developing capacity. Capacity trumps title. It means leveraging on the resources you have. Take courses online, volunteer for different cause, intern and many more. You don't get lucky by not doing anything, you get lucky by creating your luck. Opportunity meets preparedness! My volunteering with Nigerian Red Cross and some other activities while at the university is really paving way for me. Thank you!
Well said sir
You just nailed it sir. Through volunteering or contract job, undergraduates can accumulate up to 3years of work experience while schooling.
No worries Kayode, this is my contribution and task here, so why not to people at home. Remember my experience narrated in https://www.dhirubhai.net/pulse/what-undergraduates-should-do-get-prestigious-jobs-pt-ita-john-ph-d-/. There is an apparent lack of adequate information out there or outright misinformation in some situations regarding career and students!
This is a great eye opener to both undergraduates and fresh graduates.
Share, bros!
