I HIRED a person over 50. Should not be a big deal, but it was. You can't imagine the resistance I had to overcome. " He will never work hard enough", "he will not fit into our culture", "he will be taking a lot of sick days", "he is overqualified" etc Nobody said he was too old. They were all "politically correct".? Even now, many years later, I am still upset about those remarks. I had to put my foot down to get him hired.? Long story short, he was one of the best hires I ever made. We all learned from him. He made a huge difference for the company. We should STOP calling people over 50 as "overqualified" and "over the hill". Instead let's consider using these: veteran, very experienced, "someone I can learn from", someone who can make a huge difference because of their experience. Do you agree ?
Thank you, Oliver Smith for posting this. My husband’s position was eliminated after working loyally and without a spot in his record for a company for 24.3 yrs, in favor for hiring younger employees, two years ago. He is now 55 and finding very difficult to find employment in the software engineering field, for the “reasons” you stated above! I hope more people take heed and listen to you have said.
Speaking for myself and others like me. Prepare to get up early and stay late if you want to hang with me. Many of the younger generation do not have the fire in their gut to do the job an older person will do!! Nor do they have the dedication!! Retired and went back to work! Rather burn out then rust out!!!
I agree
Absolutely!!!

I follow this man for his wisdom, spine and insight! Thank you, Oliver.
I 100% agree with this. Those who dismiss over the 50's miss out on al their experience and insight. I've seen 50+ people easily outwork a younger whipper snapper. They know what to do, when and they just get on with it. They don't have any games to play or titles to chase.
Mmmm it is funny when you have seen the cycles and walked the path before and the younger aspiring and brash individuals suddenly become perplexed with situations they are unsure how to navigate or have excessive expectations how short cycles or impacts can be. They haven’t navigated these circumstances before …. This where experience, leadership and a cool head comes into its own and the value is undeniable. Cream always floats to the top. Experience is a massive asset and can be immeasurable to a company, it’s strategy and culture.
For me it is taking o ER a year trying to get a job
