#LetsGetHonest - School to Work Campaign Launch: Having grown up on a council estate in the heart of central London, as 1 of 5 siblings raised by a single mother on benefits, role models in the world of work were hard to come by. Growing up, many of the young people around me were involved in drugs, gang violence, crime and missing school. Nobodies fault. Just the cards we were dealt. Whilst at university, I had one main goal: secure lots of work experience to eventually land a job at a top investment bank. Through hard work, perseverance and failing (a lot!) I managed to get the relevant experience and converted my summer internship into a full-time offer. However, there are thousands of young people across the UK with similar backgrounds and from similar socio-economic environments to those that faced me. The result is a population of ambitious young people at risk of not achieving their full potential because of an information asymmetry. The lack of a relevant network, information and knowhow proves a huge barrier to entry into the world of work for these young people. This information gap needs to be narrowed and eventually closed - which is why the School to Work Framework is vital. EY Foundation?#SchooltoWork 00:25 - my 10 seconds of fame!
