Last week I received an Alumni Award from UMBC and the speech I gave was about thriving in times of the UNKNOWN. That was the epitome of my time in school, both as a student and an individual. We have to be okay with not having it all figured out but continue to push forward. As a senior I took 24 credits my final semester, I'd get out of class at 6pm on Tuesday and not have class until 3pm on Wednesday. I'd use this window to meet contacts who I thought would become mentor or potential employers New York City who I'd reached out to.? So I was on the last bus to New York after class on Tuesday and I would just make it back before class on Wednesday, forehead sweating and all. Believe that many times these people would cancel our 9am.? But when I stayed in NYC it was just me and a poorly packed bag, hoping this next meeting or coffee is THE ONE.? This scenario was the unknown. In the midst of things, the next steps weren't planned but every pioneer is going to face a similar road. It was scary but very much worth my future. I told this story as one of the youngest to receive this recognition from UMBC and I never could have imagined such an honor. My hope is to inspire all the others who feel they're short on opportunities.? Create your own.
Legendary!
Your story is incredible and very inspiring!!!
Congratulations Dennis Williams II. Will you be sharing the speech for "us" to hear?
Some of us will have to work harder to land that one opportunity from which we can build from. We are primed in our early 20s to find our place biologically. If some of you are going through hardship landing a job, just stop for a moment and reassess your assets. Touch bases with your support system, be vulnerable and ask for what you need. It is very useful to be steady emotionally and to look at things with a 2 year perspective. If your financial situation is immediate, loose the pride and get a job, any job you can settle with and continue looking. About the support system: people give on their own terms and when they can, so accept this as given and let go. Plant the seed that you need help and let go. Never forget to remain a human being and cultivate the traits of integrity. A business relationship might not work out, supply and demand rules there, but the human one may survive afterwards and bring future opportunity. Stay connected with your family if you have one. Take care of each other. Notice if you have toxic relationships around you: friends that help you focus on negative sides perpetually, family members that put you down and cut them off during this period of time, politely. Later, keep helping others.
Very glad I read this. Congratulations on your award, finding your purpose and having the courage to proceed with pride into the unknown. This is where I am at now. Excited to learn what my next chapter will bring.
