I had a guy email me and offer 10 hours unpaid per week to be mentored. I laughed. I'm earning in the top 6 percentile in my mid-twenties. I work with millionaires and hundred-million dollar businesses. ... and you think I'm going to let you work for me for free???? Hell no. Here's what we'll do instead. I'll pay you double what you're charging now to do all the stuff I don't want to do. I'll provide detailed feedback on everything you write and research for me, show you why the finished product I provide is so much more valuable, and help you continuously move closer to that target. I'll set a clear roadmap for what you can do to build your own business, so that in a year's time, I can no longer afford your services. We all live somewhere on a financial spectrum. Believe it or not, I'm pretty much the "poorest" person in my primary business network. But it boggles my mind how often those with the most choose to utilize their power and wealth to further exploit those with less. I'm not big on high horses, but I'll ride this one all day. Being fortunate enough to earn more doesn't make me more. And God forbid I ever look at someone struggling to climb the same ladder I climbed and think, oh look... ... a pawn for me to play.
I guarantee this man remembers you forever. Not only that, but he will pay this act forward one day, when he can afford to do so himself. I'm a firm believer in karma - Give people a chance and they will impress you, take advantage of people and they will take advantage of someone else down the line. I wish I could like this a second time.
Finally someone who is willing to pay for the work of young people! I can't even tell you the number of big, and small, corporations that aren't willing to pay for their "interns," though we still have to support ourselves too. I think I have adequate amount of experience, but that doesn't ever really matter. This gives me hope that there are more people out there like you. :)
Those with privilege must act from a place of integrity , right on!!!
You're an awesome person!
Well said
This is awesome for those in the gig economy. I stopped freelancing and decided to return to corporate America (for the right company) because of the overwhelming amount of people well versed in exploiting consultants. Kudos for being an empathetic entrepreneur.
It is fantastic when leaders invest in the future of their industry by actively encouraging and growing employees!
