I made an OFFER to someone. I then get a call from his former boss, whom I knew from one of my previous jobs and was friendly with. He says - “Oleg, the guy you made the offer to is terrible, he screwed everything up here. I was going to fire him.” I said “thank you” but not only I did not rescind the offer, my opinion of the candidate did not change. Firstly, his prior track record was immaculate except for this alleged screw up. Secondly, people are allowed mistakes, we are all human. It is what we learn from mistakes that matters. Thirdly, I learned to trust my own instincts – this candidate was the real thing. Needless to say, I was right. The employee was stellar, and within a year I promoted him to a technical management position. He is still there, years after I left – appreciated by every manager and colleague. As for that screwing everything up, I learned later it was not his doing at all ! Trust your own instincts ! Here is a shocker if you don’t: https://lnkd.in/ddKppW6

We need to clone people like you...you're such a rare species...God Bless your heart...
Thank you!
The flip side is calling the former boss without their knowledge. I was reviewing resumes for a contract position we had. I noticed one person had worked at the same company a good friend worked at. I called her up asking about this guy and her reply was an immediate "Don't touch this guy with a 10-foot pole." I don't remember now what her problem was with him, but his resume went immediately into the reject pile. He never knew that his lack of rapport with a former colleague cost him an interview, if not a job.
May be previous boss is jealous of his best employee's achievement and tried to malign his reputation. We do not know but one thing is for sure, he is continuing his bad intentions outside of company also and so he tried to ensure, to refrain Oleg to offer him job.
That former boss sounds shady af. It's unethical - and perhaps illegal? - to call up someone's potential future-employer and badmouth someone, even as a "concerned friend". Especially to initiate such a call over just receiving and responding to it (though I think that is also considered a bad business practice and possibly illegal).
