Book agent Kate McKean just talked in her Substack about wanting to rewrite her ENTIRE manuscript after turning it in and re-reading it (for the seventh time). Her lesson? “...if I want to avoid this urge to rewrite, I need to build in a lot more runway before I even turn in the manuscript." There's so much wisdom there. Because I see this all the time: “I’ve got to get it done! Someone else will beat me to market!” Or just, "I want to get this out the door already!" That antsy urge can be tempting, but your best ideas need time. It’s in that time—reading, rethinking, rewriting—that your book becomes its best self. I’m not saying spend years writing something topical (deadlines matter!), but give yourself the runway to refine. Dedication to the process is just as important as the initial spark of your idea. The market does not respond to your acceleration, so take the time you need to be confident in your manuscript. It will make your book one worth waiting for and make for a much better publishing experience for you. (By the way, there’s a part two to this. For the first time, I have shelved a book I was midway through. I bought this book because there was a promising case that we could learn about managing distractions from the practices of medieval monks. After getting 100 pages in, I had to shelve it. The book is full with references to the various distractions the monks faced while striving to concentrate their energies on God. Yet, I struggled to find practical applications for these historical insights that could be useful for a typical 9-5 worker in today’s world. Despite skimming through additional pages and even reading the conclusion, I found no change in the style or content. The writing is highly academic, filled with references, and frequently shifts between different narratives. However, it fails to connect these stories to practical, contemporary examples. My conclusion: This is a book with potential that unfortunately falls short in delivery. Who knows, maybe one day I will pick it up again. #reading #selfimprovement #distraction

Your audience doesn't just want to hear from me. They want to hear from you. Marketing a book is a unique task. I should say tasks, plural. There are more than one, after all. I did this little, short rant because too many authors are failing their books. Too many authors are refusing to take a lesson from Taylor Swift and her Swifties. She knows how to treat her audience. Those millions and millions of people didn't become such strong fans just because they like her music. They're devoted to her because they like her, because she treats them well.
