Working on vacation? A few rules
For some of us, doing some form of work while away is all but inevitable. Two-thirds of U.S. workers told Glassdoor that they work while on vacation, and Randstad reports that some 53% of employers expect employees to be available while out. How can you pull this off without feeling drained? Set clear boundaries, writes Fast Company’s Stephanie Vozza. Devote specific periods to work, with the rest dedicated to off time. Prioritize big picture thinking over routine tasks. And turn off all messaging tools.

Earlier in my career I looked at the ability and need to work while off as a badge of honor in some ways. I was delighted that the organization needed me that much. As my span of control increased along with my abilities, I’ve been able to turn those tables. I’m in a position now where I can train, educate and empower others to manage in my absence, I also plan better for my absence. However I’d be lying if I said I don’t check in at all. But it’s usually to scan critical email out of curiosity. Remember, I’ve installed a proxy to manage the average issues. I don’t let them know I’m doing that either, so no responses from me unless dire. - Dale.
