What not to say at a job interview

Why do I want this job, its all about what you can do for them, not what they can do for you?? Ensure you sell the value add and experiences you can bring to your employer.? This is an excellent time for you to articulate your skills both hard and soft that you bring to the position.? This is your time to sell yourself specifically for the position you are applying for!? An open-ended question with no boundaries may just make your interview!

It depends on who's asking. If it's a recruiter, who hasn't provided any information about the company or position that is typically kept "confidential" as some type of gatekeeper, then it's a poor question to ask at that point. If it's someone at the company, then it should just be answered truthfully, as all the answers you provide should be. If the only answer a candidate can provide is about the benefits and perks, then chances are it's not a good long-term fit. Something inherent about the position and company itself should be the answer. Do they do some type of good that will make you proud to work there? What about the firm and position seem uniquely fulfilling to you? What will be getting you out of bed excited to work there each and every morning? Chances are, it won't be the salary, benefits, and perks for very long, no matter how great they seem at first. Hopefully, you've learned enough about the position and company to answer that truthfully by the point you're sitting there being asked about why.

For this interview question, I suggest adopting a win-win outlook. In short, I want this job because I can be successful at it and my contribution will help the organization be successful. (Tailor wording as appropriate.) A major component of job satisfaction is experiencing success that makes a difference. And, for the hiring organization, the success of the new employee is the most critical test. Two caveats: (1) You need to believe it. A canned, scripted response along these lines will do more harm than good. (2) Be ready to follow up by personalizing it and giving definition of how you see this joint success playing out. A vague, uncertain view of the success picture will dilute the positive impact. However, a meaningful discussion of examples can be powerful.

I'm often surprised when people get too personal in an interview, or forget to frame their answer to show themselves in a positive light.?Always put your best foot forward, frame each answer with your strengths (or what you have learned) and focus on ways you can add value to the company.
