Veterans face employer bias

This is much needed research! Being a veteran myself, I’ve lived this bias and misunderstanding of what vets bring to the table. My favorite interview situation (and this has happened MANY times)... Interviewer: “You need people leadership experience for this role.” Me: “In the military, I...” Interviewer: “Oh I mean corporate people leadership.” Me: ?? (What’s the difference?) Post 9/11 veterans are twice as likely as their civilian peers to be unemployed and only 1/3 veterans hold levels of responsibility equal or greater than what they held in the service. If this happened to be the data post WWII we would have been in utter chaos. To everyone out there saying that #veterans need to better translate their resumes and that it’s the veteran’s fault for not being a good match that is objectively false. STOP IT! Most jobs in the military aren’t combat arms but support. My specialties both have direct civilian analogs. The terminology is virtually identical. Turns out it is really bias from employers concerning emotional intelligence. Employers do have a bias that is unlikely to change. It is important to know what it is so you can counter act said bias. If you are a veteran here is the take away: include in your resume things that highlight your emotional intelligence. For me, I failed in this area most spectacularly. I have countless examples of customer service in situations that would melt most peoples brains. None of the stories are on my resume. #employers #resumes #emotionalintelligence #veteran #bias

This is a telling article as, within the past two days, I have learned that two highly successful and divergent elite military veterans were recently turned away from C-Suite positions, after soft offers had already been given. Maybe this is an opportunity for one the several world-class veterans organizations out there to rebut these points via, not just social media, but an op-ed or a letter to the editor in the national press. I'm certain that innumerable examples of success stories exist which can disprove the negative bias of veterans during hiring processes. I’ve had loads of people I’ve had discussions with insist that this bias doesn’t exist, and nearly every veteran I know has experienced it. It’s nice to see someone did some research to show that this problem is real.
