Trade war could pay off for farmers

By and large, a trade war between China and the United States is bad news for Australia's economy. But a new EY report suggests it could also see Australian farmers — currently dealing with a crippling drought — receive a one-off $1B boost which will also create 3900 new agriculture jobs. The reason? One of Australia's biggest agriculture competitors in China is America, and China has flagged that it will prevent its state-owed enterprises from buying US farm products as part of the tit-for-tat over President Trump's tariffs.

Trade disputes are undoubtedly a challenge for small, open economy’s like Australia. In the near term though there could be opportunities - we’re already seeing it in commodities as China uses infrastructure to support economic activity. Agricultural exports could be next as China looks to Aussie suppliers in the wake of the decision to halt agricultural imports from the US. ??@EY_Australia??
