Store closures in the U.S. are at an all-time high. So far, 7,062 stores have announced they are shuttering this year, according to Coresight Research. Experts there say the total for 2019 could top 12,000. Even big names are closing some stores, including Fred's Pharmacy, Bed Bath & Beyond, and Charming Charlie. Despite this appearance of a "retail apocalypse," estimates show sales rose 4.6% in 2018 amid new store openings and burgeoning e-commerce, according to Forbes, and are forecast to grow almost as much this year.

In a recent consumer study it was found that 50% of consumers spend more time at home than they did five years ago. Rather than close stores, perhaps redesign the store or repurpose it. Brands like lush (sinks to try products), FarFetch (augmented reality), Vans (skatepark), Toms (virtual giving trip) are finding ways to completely change the store experience to provide meaning and value.
