Jeff Bezos once said "Your brand is what people say about you when you are not in the room." Think about it - your LinkedIn profile and activity paint a picture of your professional identity that is available 24/7.
You must have sufficient information for us to get an impression, but you also have to manage what comes out. You can NOT list, post, share or comment EVERYTHING that comes to mind.
I learned this years ago the hard way!
While networking with (and being evaluated by) prominent DC figures to be a White House Fellow, I ran into some that had never interacted with the military. They got me speaking about "war stories" and eventually I caught myself telling a story about peeing off the side of a Humvee in Bosnia because of all the land-mines.
In the Met...during a black-tie dinner...I did not get selected.
Would I have rocked that program? No doubt.
Did I belong there after sharing that story? Absolutely not.
Acting authentic beats being authentic. I needed to paint a picture of the Mike Quinn that would have excelled in the program, not the 21-year old kid that was in Bosnia.
Not sure if you are doing it right? Ask someone for their thoughts. What they get is more important than what you think you are putting out.
