Subway closing 500 US stores
It may get a bit more difficult to buy a $5 foot-long sandwich. Subway announced plans to close 500 U.S. stores this year, after closing 800 stores last year, Bloomberg reports. The chain is still the most widely located in the U.S., with 25,908 stores after the closures. The market for fast food has become increasingly competitive. Subway's domestic sales fell 4.4% over the past year, while McDonald's rose 3.4%. The company hopes to make up the domestic store closures with growth abroad. It plans to open 1,000 new stores in Germany, the U.K., South Korea, India, China and Mexico, per Bloomberg.
