SpaceX will cut about 10% of its workforce in order to "become a leaner company," reports the Los Angeles Times. Elon Musk's privately held rocket company will eliminate hundreds of jobs from its staff of about 6,000 employees. The firm — whose income derives mainly from commercial and national-security satellite launches — said the layoffs were necessary in order to move ahead with ambitious projects such as space-based internet and its plans to send humans to Mars.

It has been a wild ride, but it’s time to say goodbye. The last 4 ? years have been a transformation for both SpaceX and myself: I’ve made many systems improvements, two children, a lot of SQL, a supplier portal, had spine surgery, not had enough sleep, but so much self-discovery. It’s been a metamorphosis and I’ve come out the other side far more capable and confident than I ever thought imaginable. Thanks to my colleagues for making this such an incredible experience. It’s a privilege to work with such intelligent, inspiring, ambitious, and humble people. So much respect for you all. Humanity is being forever changed by the work we do. I’ll always be rooting for you, and I’ll see you at the party when we launch people into space. Go SpaceX!
