Most ever lose health insurance

I am always stunned by the failure to guarantee every person some form of health insurance in the United States compared to most other developed countries. The consequences are on full display during this dual economic and public health crisis: when people who lose their jobs during the pandemic also lose their health insurance, they are less likely to seek out COVID-19 testing or treatment, which makes it harder to get the outbreak under control and return the economy to prosperity. It’s a negative cycle. No one benefits from having over 5.4 million more Americans uninsured in the last 4 months - not the patients who must pay higher costs out-of-pocket, nor the healthcare providers who have higher rates of uncompensated care and certainly not the payers, who miss out on a member population that should be covered by their plans. https://lnkd.in/eeUJrPr #healthcare #healthinsurance #healthpolicy #COVID19

The coronavirus pandemic stripped an estimated 5.4 million American workers of their health insurance between February and May, a stretch in which more adults became uninsured because of job losses than have ever lost coverage in a single year, according to a new analysis. “We knew these numbers would be big,” said Stan Dorn, who directs the group’s National Center for Coverage Innovation and wrote the study. “This is the worst economic downturn since World War II. It dwarfs the Great Recession. So it’s not surprising that we would also see the worst increase in the uninsured.” Read more in The New York Times
