Mobile data usage skyrockets

5G networks will be able to support diverse and extreme requirements for latency, throughput, capacity and availability. 5G technology will enable a plethora of services impractical with previous wireless technologies. With network slicing, operators and enterprises will be able to address precisely the specific needs of different customer segments. For example, they will connect the factory of the future and help create a fully automated and flexible production system. In healthcare, hospitals will be able to arrange remote robotic surgery and on the roads, self-driving cars and smart infrastructure will reduce accidents. City governments could be served for real time traffic management, emergency response and video surveillance with customized quality and security requirements. The real challenge is to use connectivity, broadband and applications to redesign processes and programmes to innovate new ways to deliver expansion, excellence and equity in education, health, justice, security, safety, transport, citizen services etc. The time is Now, Carpe Diem (Seize the Day) !

The real digital transformation is happening in smaller cities or villages not metros!! I always feel amazed to see people in rural villages using #YouTube, Video Calling, #Whatsapp, and other apps for entertainment, business, and social interaction purposes. Since #Jio entry, 4G is now available in interior parts of the villages/towns too, plus the cost per GB is dirt cheap to be affordable for almost everyone. With that surge in data consumption, I suspect a low quality experience with high congestion in future on mobile internet if appropriate infrastructure (#WiFi, #WiredBroadband, #5G) not built in time. Why? How much 4G spectrum capacity is really available with all Telcos (#Jio, #Airtel, #Vodafone) to accommodate growing population of smartphone users in India with high consumption of Video content than web-based. We might hit a ceiling sooner than what Telcos must be predicting. Or what new innovations are in pipeline to tackle smartphone users' high data consumption in new digital India? Thoughts? India can't be a #5G leader if telcos don't invest to ramp up fibre infrastructure. #India has only 22% of mobile towers connected by fibre, while 78% are wireless -- without a fibre backbone. Contrast that with #China, who has 80% of its network connectivity over fibre.
