Kennedy to retire from Supreme Court

With his chance to replace Justice Anthony Kennedy, Trump may have fewer checks on his power than any president in his lifetime.?

The #USSupremeCourt justices drank a lot of coffee recently because they have been BUSY. Here are some of the major rulings you should be aware of: ? Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission – held that the Commission’s actions in this case violated the Free Exercise Clause. Religious and philosophical objections to gay marriage are protected views and in some instances protected forms of expression. ? NIFLA v. Becerra, Attorney General of California – held that by compelling NIFLA to provide information on abortion “alters the content of [their] speech” and violates the First Amendment ? Trump v. Hawaii – held that the President has lawfully exercised the broad discretion granted to him under 8 U. S. C. §1182(f) to suspend the entry of aliens into the US, meaning the travel ban is lawful for security purposes. ? Janus v. American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees – held that “the State’s extraction of agency fees from non-consenting public sector employees violates the First Amendment,” meaning non-union workers cannot be forced to pay dues. ? Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy, considered ideologically centrist and therefore a pivotal swing vote, just announced his retirement. https://lnkd.in/dVCQtkr
