Jobless claims steady as virus rises
New jobless claims held steady, at about 1.3 million last week, as virus spikes around the country prompted fresh business restrictions. The applications for unemployment insurance benefits have remained at about 1 million for 17 weeks, after surging as high as 6 million when statewide shutdowns took effect in March and April. California, Florida and Arizona saw initial filings increase as the states paused or reversed reopenings — they are among 22 states to have done so amid new outbreaks of the coronavirus.
- Retail sales returned almost to pre-pandemic levels in June, rising 7.5% after jumping 18.2% in May, as states began to reopen.
