Full disclosure: I never negotiated my salary when I worked in corporate environments. To be honest, it never really occurred to me that I could. I assumed that my bosses valued the work I did and rewarded me accordingly. I also assumed there were salary policies and those policies had to be followed. I know, really na?ve. That’s a mistake I hope you don’t make!
Once I left the corporate world and had my own coaching company, I got considerably better at negotiating my fees. I’m guessing that was because I became more aware of what was being paid in the marketplace for similar services and because I had a better sense of what the value of the services I was providing was. (In other words, that women made a lot more money as a result of my coaching.) Looking back, those were two things I should have paid attention to about my salary in a corporate environment.
