The chronic shortage of GPs is so great it cannot be filled, a report by three think-tanks has claimed, warning that urgent action is needed to tackle staff shortages in Britain’s NHS. The Nuffield Trust, The King’s Fund and the Health Foundation are calling for the deployment of skilled staff, including pharmacists and physiotherapists, “much more widely and routinely in and alongside general practice”. The NHS needs to hire thousands of healthcare professionals to meet the goals of the government’s ambitious Long Term Plan.
