More than one in four workers have backed out of a job offer, according to a recent survey. And rather than feeling like celebrating multiple job offers, many dread having to turn companies down and simply don't show up to work. Instead of torpedoing their reputation, The Wall Street Journal suggests people be strategic when accepting job offers. Once a person accepts, they should do everything possible not to back out of that agreement.
Recruiters need to adapt to train their candidates on how transparency is key during interview and offer process. I try my best to prepare my client to always have a backup plan in case their first choice backs out for whatever reason.

Interesting read - I believe transparency and open communication should be present on both sides: employer and candidate. I also believe that accepting an offer is like signing a contract and a lot of consideration and thought should be allocated before signing. That being said, it is always important also to consider the human element in all this: employers are also people (and they should act as such) and candidates as well. This is the part where emotional intelligence plays a significant role. Take that away and keep only the process, and things could go wrong.

My question is what do you do when you've received 2 offers, and you are transparent by telling them you're expecting another offer, but they go ahead and decide to offer to someone else since you aren't a concrete "yes" to them? I've had this happen where 2 companies made me an offer, and I told the first one that I was expecting another offer, and that I needed time to decide, and instead of waiting for me, they went ahead and made the decision for me. Which I understand because they needed to fill the position, but it also feels insulting for a potential employer to decide, "if you need time to decide, we don't want you anyway."
I am shocked and beyond disappointed by the fact that 28% of people don’t at least have the courtesy to tell the person that offered them the job they are not going to take it and just no show. And, to make it worse 80% of people think it’s ok. Do the same 80% also believe if they were a hiring manager that needed an employee they would be fine if the person did not show? Are you ok if the doctor scheduled to do you heart surgery went golfing instead? Or even the kid who mows you lawn decided to just not do it and never take your call again? Where has civility and common courtesy gone? Our word and honor are all we have. Please people we can do better.

From the comments, InMails, & conversations with 76,000 people regarding my latest blog on ghosting (https://bit.ly/2xemzIo), approx. 80% of those who commented felt they weren’t obligated to inform their potential employers if they decided not to show up to work. 15% believed that it was wrong to ghost potential employers regardless, as it reflected poorly on one’s character. The remaining 5% felt that both employers & candidates were responsible for the rise of ghosting. Sue Shellenbarger offers great insight into why people are ghosting after accepting jobs. While the phenomenon seems to have arisen as a generational shift in communication, it also points back to the way we approach business relationships. Cultivating emotional intelligence in the hiring process eliminates ghosting because it would no longer be considered a transactional process. If employers provide candidates with a great candidate experience they are more likely to communicate openly with them. If candidates understand that burning bridges – whether due to poor #communication skills, anxiety, or lack of interest – costs them important relationships that could potentially enable #careersuccess, ghosting would not happen. Both sides can do better!

This is a very good read, with some good guidelines at the end. Getting multiple job offers is nice, but it has trade-offs. It means a decision has to be made, and part of that is saying no to at least one offer. It's never easy, and sometimes it's harder than other times, but as grownups, we have to do things like this. Put another way, it's a pleasant problem, and burning bridges is never a good outcome.
I believe this has to do with how companies treat people nowadays. They Ghost applicants all the time they don’t let you know if you’re not under consideration for the position, they just quit responding. People are hedging their bets by accepting a position while still looking at other offers, there’s no loyalty from companies so why should an applicant have loyalty towards a company, business is business your only a number & now so are they. I'm more old school & being a person of your word so I don’t agree with taking a position & then ghosting but I can see why this is happening.
