Fast-food workers give up penalties
In a controversial move that split the union movement, part-time fast-food workers will forego penalty rates for overtime work over the next three months. Workers would be guaranteed a minimum of eight hours a week as part of the deal, which advocates say allows fast food giants like McDonalds to retain staff during the coronavirus pandemic. The companies can also demand workers take annual leave during the crisis — and unpaid leave. Fast food conglomerates say the flexibility is needed, following “a dramatic decline in customer demand.”
