Dollar Tree's boozy revival plan
Dollar Tree has a plan to revive its failing Family Dollar stores: Sell booze. The chain said it would sell alcoholic drinks in about 1,000 Family Dollar stores to boost revenue. Dollar Tree, which bought Family Dollar in 2015, plans to close almost 400 of the latter chain's stores this year because of disappointing sales. The parent company also said that it would be breaking its $1 price point in some stores and that tariffs on Chinese goods could drive up prices further.

This is one of the worst ideas for a business I have ever heard. It is very insulting to low income/poor communities, in my opinion, which have too many liquor stores in their communities already and the struggle to keep people from abusing alcohol and help them recover from alcohol abuse is difficult and costly. What a terrible message this sends to those communities these stores serve and in general. If Dollar Tree is spending so much money reviving their business model, then they should spend that money on more low cost healthier food/drink choices and low cost well made products. There are questions that should be asked about this move: How will the stores keep underage purchases at bay? How will this affect current employees that may be under the legal age for alcohol consumption; will they lose their jobs or have their roles/hours changed? Where will the alcohol be located and how will the customer access it?
