Another executive to leave Facebook

On top of all of its other problems, Facebook is facing renewed criticisms of racial discrimination at the company and towards users. Mark Luckie, a former employee shared a company wide memo today in which he talks about his own experiences of discrimination. "In some buildings, there are more 'Black Lives Matter' posters than there are actual black people," he writes. Facebook says "we are going to keep doing all we can to be a truly inclusive company." But if that's true, their best effort isn't very effective! The social network released its first diversity report in 2014. Since then, the percentage of people in technical roles has remained flat at 1 percent. Tech companies talk a big game on diversity and, across the board, are failing.

So many wise points here in this essay by Gina Bianchini. I especially appreciate her analysis of Facebook turning the crank too hard on its pay-to-play “boosting” schemes. The aha! moment for an author like me came re: launching new books. Back in 2011, setting up a Facebook Page for the book was smart! It won new connections and closer ties to existing fans. I got a lot of free value; I paid for maybe $30 of boosting along the way. Fast forward to another book launch in 2017. Running a Facebook Page was like being in a bad nightclub. From a tiny start, I couldn't do anything without getting bombarded with messages telling me to pay for better distribution. Unnerved, I abandoned the page and built new marketing around Mailchimp, direct mail, speaking events, podcasts and even Twitter. Short-term, an exodus by micro-spending businesses (i.e. book authors) has zero effect on FB's $50 billion ad revenue. As Gina points out, FB remains a supremely good ad delivery system for the big guys. But long-term, it's the classic signal of disruption on its way. #publishing #facebook
