America faces an uneven baby bust
Some 3.85 million babies were born in the U.S. in 2017, the lowest rate since 1987, meaning we’re not having enough new children to sustain our population, says The Wall Street Journal. The trend, however, is not spread evenly across the country, according to the CDC. The Midwest and Southeast have higher fertility rates than the Northeast and West Coast. Just two states — South Dakota and Utah — are having enough babies to sustain the population.
