How exactly Amazon, Berkshire Hathaway?and JPMorgan Chase & Co.?plan to reduce healthcare costs for their employees is unclear.?Here are few data points to keep in mind: The combined companies have 1.1 million employees. For perspective, Walmart, one of the nation’s largest employers, has 1.5 million employees in the U.S. The U.S. healthcare system spends $9,892 on healthcare per person per year, according to the OECD. That’s 80% more than what Germany spends person per year and 25% more than Switzerland. Healthcare spending by private companies rose 6.1% to $676 billion, in 2016, according to estimates from the CMS (via the WSJ). Healthcare costs are rising. Employers aren’t happy about it, and neither are the employees who are increasingly on the hook for paying for more of those expensive lab tests and prescription drug refills. No wonder Berkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffett called rising?healthcare costs a “hungry tapeworm on the American economy.” #NewHealthCompany
