Amazon is looking to sell its devices offline as well. The e-tailer plans to install more than 100 kiosks in malls to sell products such as the Echo speaker, the Fire TV dongle and the Kindle ebook reader, Economic Times reports, citing sources. Amazon first experimented with kiosks in India over two years ago, and it currently runs five of them across Bengaluru, Mumbai, Ahmedabad and Noida. But earlier this month, the e-commerce giant announced it will close all of its 87 pop-up stores in the US.

For a company that works on wafer thin margins and has kept growing by that philosophy, private label sales through a company controlled channel would be considered more as a branding / visibility exercise at the beginning. That said private labels are highly profitable and if they see more traction they might want to scale up and monetize it. Coming to the point of comparison of the US and India market, it's an uncorrelated comparison as the former is highly penetrated by eCommerce compared to a single digit later. Newer and less mature markets need to have a touch and feel to establish penetration by building trust. They should ensure that an omnichannel experience is maintained.
