After a yearlong search, Amazon has finally announced where its new headquarters will be located – the Long Island City neighborhood of Queens, New York, and an area of Northern Virginia dubbed National Landing.

Amazon announced on Tuesday that it would open new headquarters locations in Long Island City in New York and in northern Virginia, capping off a highly publicized contest that lasted over a year and involved 238 municipal hopefuls. What gave these cities an edge over the competition? LinkedIn Economic Graph data may offer a few clues. Workers in both NYC and the DC area have complementary skill sets to those in Seattle, Amazon's hometown. Though neither rank at the very top for tech skills or business operations chops, NYC is among the U.S. cities with the richest pool of sales and marketing talent.
