Alberta will cut 2,100 public sector jobs by 2023 and slash its budget by $1.3 billion, in efforts to eliminate its $8.7 billion deficit. Health, education and social service budgets will be frozen, and grants to municipalities will be cut by up to 50 per cent. Years of slow economic growth have caused layoffs and budget cuts throughout the province, and Alberta’s Finance Minister said “boom times” won't return any time soon.
Interesting headline. “Elimination” is actually through attrition over 4 years. Oddly, the article forgot to mention the increase of 80,000 public sector jobs in Alberta over the past 4 years. Just gives these “cuts” some perspective.
I had the opportunity to attend the budget lock-up event today and hear directly from Premier Kenney and Minister Toews on Alberta’s key economic priorities for the next four years. The Government had some challenging decisions to make, but Alberta Central supports what they delivered today: a fiscally prudent budget that balances the current economic situation with the needs of Albertans, ensuring vulnerable populations are not left behind. A shift to cut spending and ensure Alberta has a plan to balance the budget, using realistic revenue projections that err on the side of caution, is a step in the right direction. Credit unions are looking forward to playing a larger role in the economic future of Alberta, working with government and our members to support small businesses, families and communities. #alberta #creditunions
