“Another referendum, a delay beyond the European elections, taking ‘no deal’ off the table or not leaving at all would betray the 2016 People’s Vote and damage democracy and our party for a generation.”
Parliament made three promises:
1. Parliament gave the choice of staying in the EU (with the reforms secured by David Cameron, the former Conservative Prime Minister) or leave. The United Kingdom went on to vote to leave with a margin of 1.2m votes.
2. Parliament triggered Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty starting the clock on leaving the #EU, either under a withdrawal agreement or without a deal, at the end of the 2 year period set out in Article 50.
3. Parliament enacted the Withdrawal Act which set in law, we will be leaving the EU on 29 March 2019 at 11:00pm.
Parliament has taken 3 decisive steps in its promise to fulfil the will of the people. One could argue, Conservative and Labour MP’s, by standing on manifestos pledging to leave the EU, gave a further promise to do so.
If they now thwart #Brexit it will trigger a constitutional crisis - the people versus Parliament. MP’s are representatives of their constituents; not delegates. Being a politician is not a job; It’s public service.
