A win for the American Dream?
The majority of high-achieving low-income students don’t attend selective colleges, a powerful driver of economic mobility. That’s because they don’t apply in the first place. To counter that, researchers from the University of Michigan sent out letters to low-income state residents with high grades, encouraging them to apply and reminding them they were eligible to receive tuition and housing if accepted. Some 67% of students who received letters applied, and 27% ended up enrolling, a major increase over similar students who didn’t receive letters.
