400,000 airline jobs lost to Covid

I have been putting off this post for quite awhile and wrestling with what to say, but after reading the inspirational stories from so many others, I was able to finally put something together. As many know, Covid-19 has ravaged the airline industry to a point where my role, along with the roles of many of my amazing co-workers, were no longer needed earlier this year. The loss of my position was hard, and job searching in a city where my network is not fully developed is even harder. When all of this began, I promised myself I was going to get up early every day just like I did for work, roll up my sleeves and dedicate myself to finding new creative ways to search for the next step in my career. 3 months later, I am still working harder than ever. I know I can promise to any company that takes a chance on me- dedication, creativity, and an unwavering passion for growth. I am ready to get back to work, and if anyone knows of any corporate HR, Talent Acquisition or analytical support opportunities in Atlanta, please let me know! Our industry has experienced down cycles before but nothing of this magnitude. Yet in each of the last two contractions, smaller-capacity airplanes have been pivotal in the rebuilding of airline bottom lines and networks. And they’ll be pivotal again. I discussed the rather bleak outlook for Asian airlines yesterday on CNBC's Street Signs. In this clipping from the last three minutes of the interview I talk about the prospects for returning to profitability in 2021 for AirAsia and other airline groups. The clip starts following a question from Nancy Hungerford on if Tony Fernandes' statement that AirAsia Group can return to profit in 2021 is realistic. My reply started by explaining that 2021 is optimistic given that AirAsia does not expect traffic to fully recover until 2022 and that all airlines will struggle to be profitable next year given the much lower than expected revenues. This clip includes the second part of my answer and my thoughts on more job cuts and more bankruptcies for the industry. Back in the saddle after an extended spring break...and it was as if I’d never been away. Felt good. The airline industry, though, is far from any type of normalcy as it prepares for tens of thousands of job cuts. American has warned of 20,000 staff reductions while United expects up to 36,000 job losses. Others are sure to follow.
