Financial Recruitment: Why Is It So Hard To Find The Right Candidate?

Financial Recruitment: Why Is It So Hard To Find The Right Candidate?

Every employer will have an ideal candidate in mind for their specific role. They will require the correct blend of academic qualifications, technical expertise, personal qualities and of course the elusive “x” factor that all employers seek out in a new staff member.

However, the thought of sifting through dozens (if not hundreds) of CVs, would fill most employers with dread! As we are currently dealing with a global pandemic, you also have to consider that the time, energy and costs of hiring, adds another layer of pressure onto businesses.

If recruiting someone new is crucial to seeing you through this ‘new normal’ but you just can’t stretch yourself any thinner - what can you do?

External Factors

To address the elephant in the room, one of the biggest challenges companies are facing is a global pandemic. COVID-19 has impacted businesses across the world with some sectors being hit harder than others. It has led to companies closing, job losses or huge financial cuts for the majority of them.

Many have not yet returned to a stable financial position which would allow them to hire the same number of employees they may have had prior to the lockdown or the furlough scheme. Companies are having to rethink their budgets, internal structures and services to get back on their feet.

The financial sector is renowned for recruiting worldwide talent from across the globe. The recent referendum result may have slightly dampened the appeal that coming to work and live in the UK may have had to those looking to immigrate to pursue a career in finance.

Hiring ‘Just OK’ Is Never Ok

As mentioned, the pandemic has seen many companies having to tighten their belts, but work ten times as hard to stay afloat. This has put an immense strain on employers and their current team members. With a more full-on workload but fewer resources and money available, this could lead to some employers hiring an ‘ok’ candidate just to save some of what little they had left to dedicate.

You would think that this would ease some pressure, but that’s not always the case. In the long run, hiring somebody who is not a 100% fit for your organisation could cost you more in training, time and resources than if you had just held off.

Specialised Over Softer Skills

New job roles are springing up all the time. The financial world relies heavily on technology and reflects the ever-changing state of society so is a reflection of that. This sector relies on the constant movement of the brightest and the best.

These roles are becoming increasingly technical and specialised so the requirement on the candidate is that they have the right skillset. Are you attracting the right skillset?

There are a number of factors that will contribute to this such as brand image, accurate job descriptions and a wider reach. When you’re advertising for an open position, you want to ensure that you’re not limiting your reach in any way to ensure that news of the opportunity is reaching these specialised candidates.
