The Journey of a Real Business Woman
Before Tammie Terrell Mompreneur Coaching came to be, I was working as a substitute teacher while running Choice Home Education Consulting – my homeschool consulting business—and being a married mother of three girls. In addition to this, I was also tutoring six days a week, running a homeschool parent co-op two days a week, had published my first book and was working on a second! People always asked me if I slept and I would always say that I did…between midnight and 5 AM.
My business started as most things do for me – a conversation. I was reading through a thread in a Facebook group where a homeschool mom was asking what others did to earn extra money. I spoke up about my homeschool consulting and tutoring then ended up being involved in fifteen Messenger conversations explaining how I got started and giving advice on each woman could use her background and education to do what I was doing.
I quickly started a Facebook group and began pouring into these woman, going so far as to share the material from the consulting class I’d taken. Each woman took the information and applied it to her own situation and I was there to answer questions as well as share tips from my journey.
After a few months, the engagement level dropped in the group. As I tried several things to reengage my members, I soon started to see the numbers drop. I started with 15, then 7, and then 1. I still work with that one lady today! I closed the group and then began to build a coaching business. I spent HOURS looking at what others were doing and began to pattern myself after them, which didn’t last long.
My Aha moment came once I finished my second book, The Virtuous Business Woman: Inspired by Proverbs 31. I realized that my book was what I was to use as the foundation of my programs! With that, Tammie Terrell Mompreneur Coaching was born. I had a business coach, who was a blessing to me, and I began to craft my programs using my flagship book. I didn’t see the growth that I wanted until I wrote the third book, The 7 Virtuous Business Woman Slayers: 7 Deadly Copouts, which soon took over the flagship position.
My first speaking engagement came with this book and, two months after that conference, I started doing Lunch and Learn Workshops in the city where I live. That was October 2016 and since then, I have held close to 10 in-person and online workshops using my books. (By the way, I have 9 books out right now!)
My business took yet another turn when I was asked a question I’d never considered. A lady who follows me online asked me which one of my books she should read first. At first, I couldn’t answer her question, so I reread my own books and soon found that the messages of both books meshed together. I began to outline what I saw unfolding before my eyes and the document was over 40 typed pages long!
I soon began to see that the 7 Virtuous Business Woman Slayers were descriptive of women in business, hence the immersion of the Real Business Women Slay Slayers Business Seminar and Facebook group, which I have done three times this year and plan to do more in 2018. In addition to this, I launched the bi-weekly Virtuous Business Woman Motivational Broadcast on the Finding My Way Channel via BlogTalkRadio, on Facebook, and on YouTube. Although I do still have both businesses, my focuses are building the Real Business Women Slay Slayers Movement and championing my radio show.
2018 is going to be quite a busy year for every facet of my life and business. I recently applied to be a speaker for a TEDx event in the city where I am. Should I be chosen, I will start 2018 with this event. Aside from this, I will be releasing 3, possibly 4, new books –business, faith, and a splash of fiction-- as well as facilitating the Real Business Women Slay Slayers Business Seminar Series, my Virtuous Business Woman Lunch and Learn Workshops, the radio show, and a full-scale retreat! I will also continue my involvement with my Toastmasters International club and the National Association of Women Business Owners.
One of the best pieces of advice I give women is this: Someone somewhere sometime somehow someway needs that something that YOU do and that just because someone does what you do doesn’t mean that they do what YOU do!
I’d like to leave you with three tips to think about as you move forward in crafting your business mission and vision for the upcoming year. My first tip to finish the year strong and start the new year stronger is to be aware of what you are watching, who you are listening to, what you are reading, and what you are doing! These four things can make or break both you and your business. My second tip would be to not allow the excuses of money, time, family demands, job demands, misunderstood talents, undiscovered talents, and complacency to keep you from moving forward in life and business. My third tip would be to be real and honest about what your struggles are and be willing to admit to and strengthen your weaknesses.

6 年Tammie, I love your story and it is helping me to move forward and get noticed in my business. My one take away from your story is and I quote: " just because someone does what you do doesn’t mean that they do what YOU do!" I believe that this is one of the things that holds some of us women back in our business. For me that has been my challenge, my struggle and even my procrastination.
