The future of tech leadership is not just about innovation—it's about integration and resilience. In a world where technology is the backbone of every business, the role of tech leadership is evolving rapidly. As McKinsey & Company partners highlight, we're moving beyond core tech to a realm where digital and AI influence business and functional leadership. Here’s my advice to Board Chairs and Lead Directors on democratizing Board Ownership of Technology Strategy direction and business resilience. 1. Expand Tech Leadership Roles: Human Capital & Compensation Committee Chairs must empower CIOs and CTOs to shape business strategy, not just execute it. Let them take on broader responsibilities that align with the company's vision. 2. Align Incentives with Value: It's crucial to link tech leaders' rewards to business outcomes, not just project delivery. This alignment ensures that technology serves as a catalyst for growth. 3. Own Cybersecurity Strategy: Technology/Innovation and Cybersecurity Committees should shift from compliance-driven to business-centric security strategies. Cybersecurity should be a strategic enabler, not just a checkbox. 4. Oversee Enterprise Resilience: The full board must oversee manturity models of process dependencies and invest in robust continuity plans. This foresight is key to navigating uncertainties. 5. Engage with Investors: Move beyond a guidance mindset. Engage with the investor community to oversee tech-enabled innovation, supporting the creation of new digital businesses & data monetization opportunities. 6. Include Scalable Architecture in Capital Allocation: Ensure tech infrastructure can support future innovation and AI initiatives. This is about building a foundation for sustainable growth. 7. Oversee Talent Development: Upskill teams on emerging tech & develop cross-functional capabilities in tech leaders. This will ensure a future-ready workforce. 8. Adopt AI Ethically: Boards should seek metrics on the strategic use & ethical implementation of AI. This is crucial for maintaining trust and driving innovation responsibly. 9. Boost Board-Level Tech Expertise: Regularly refresh the board with tech-savvy members and engage with tech leaders. This will ensure informed decision-making. 10. Foster Cross-Functional Integration: Break down silos between IT & other business functions, starting at the boardroom. Integration is key to leveraging technology for competitive advantage. My recommendations aim to position organizations to harness technology effectively while managing associated risks. What do you think?
