Learning to suppress fear is something that we all do throughout our lives, but how does our brain do it? This is the question a team at University College London has sought to answer. Using mice and a growing shadow to simulate a swooping bird, the team identified critical pathways involved in the fear response. They noted that, when the mice learned not to fear the shadow, a pathway was activated in the brain which suppressed this instinctual fear response. Although only early-stage research, it is hoped that this discovery could help to develop novel treatment strategies for conditions such as anxiety and PTSD.
