Chicagoland employers, civic leaders, education providers and many talented apprentices gathered today at our Schaumburg, Ill. headquarters for a Chicago Apprentice Network (CAN) event to celebrate the U.S. Department of Labor’s (DOL) National Apprenticeship Week and promote the continued expansion of apprentice programs. Co-hosted with CAN founding members Aon and Accenture, the event offered a fantastic opportunity to promote and learn about the value of apprenticeship programs. Illinois Deputy Director of Employment & Training Julio Rodriguez, from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, kicked off the program as the keynote speaker and offered a proclamation to Zurich North America for its work in promoting apprenticeships. Lydia Arthurs, Zurich claims shared services support specialist and graduate of the Zurich Apprenticeship Program, highlighted how her apprenticeship offered the perfect opportunity to work and continue her education at the same time. “I was often able to transition what I learned in school directly to my work the very next day,” she said. Ezequiel Burgos, part of Zurich’s first cohort of bachelor’s degree apprentices, shared how his apprenticeship has helped him transition to a new industry. “I’ve gained a better understanding of how a business works, and my coursework has been hugely helpful for becoming proficient in software programs that I’m using in my role,” he said. Dr. Avis Proctor, Ed.D., president of Harper College, highlighted the collaboration with Zurich and the Chicago Apprentice Network as a benefit to Harper students and contributor to the economic prosperity of the Chicagoland community and the region. Zurich North America CHRO Al Crook discussed the growth and success of the Zurich Apprenticeship Program, noting how the earn-and-learn apprenticeship model opens doors to newcomers to the industry and attracts talent from a broad base. “We encourage companies to explore the benefits of the apprenticeship model,” he said. “It’s a viable talent strategy in good markets and bad, and it’s a proven strategy to expand your talent pipeline.”? Happy National Apprenticeship Week! We’re celebrating this 10th anniversary of the U.S. Department of Labor’s National Apprenticeship Week with our Chicago Apprentice Network (CAN) partners Aon and Accenture in a co-hosted gathering of CAN members, elected officials, civic leaders, employers and apprentices at our Zurich North America headquarters. As a founding member of the Chicago Apprentice Network (CAN), we’re proud to see apprenticeship programs expanding as more employers recognize the value of this critical career pathway. CAN launched in 2017 and recently hitting the milestone of creating 2,000 apprenticeships in the Chicagoland area! We’re also celebrating our Zurich apprentices this week, as well as the continued success and expansion of the Zurich Apprenticeship Program. Since 2016, we’ve hired more than 300 apprentices. Our most recent graduating class of 59 apprentices was our largest yet! Learn more about our program at https://spkl.io/6040fVoL2 #NationalApprenticeshipWeek #NationalApprenticeWeek #Apprenticeship

Our Head of Technical Claims Japhet Boutin and Zurich Insurance Group Chief Claims Officer Tom Thornberry immersed themselves in the latest in professional liability insurance at the 2024 Professional Liability Underwriting Society Conference in Chicago, where Japhet led a packed session on Employment Practices Liability — dispelling the notion that social inflation hasn’t crept into that realm — alongside Kelly Thoerig of Marsh, Gregg Glick of Allied World and Dove A. E. Burns of Obermayer Rebmann Maxwell & Hippel LLP. A recurring topic of conversation at the four-day conference: How the recent U.S. election will influence the landscape for policyholders, brokers, carriers, attorneys, courts, federal agencies and employees in the EPL landscape in the year ahead. The consensus? It will be a dynamic time! #PLUSConference
