Today’s post brings to light a critical but often overlooked issue: the United States is running out of landfill space in certain areas, such as Long Island. With the imminent closure of the Brookhaven Landfill, Long Island’s municipalities face difficult decisions about how to manage the waste of three million residents. The urgency is compounded by the lack of mainstream media coverage on this issue, which has far-reaching consequences for communities across the country. While mainstream discussions on waste management are sparse, the article highlights the growing crisis. Long Island banned the landfilling of municipal solid waste (MSW) in the 1980s to protect drinking water aquifers, leaving incineration as the primary method of disposal. However, the region still generates massive amounts of construction and demolition (C&D) debris, as well as MSW ash, that need to be managed effectively. With the landfill’s closure, transporting waste off the island will lead to more emissions, higher costs, and a strained infrastructure. The Waste Reduction and Management Institute (WRMI) is studying potential solutions, including rail transport of waste and expanding recycling technologies. Environmental justice concerns also loom large, as disadvantaged communities living near waste facilities have historically suffered from pollution and poor air quality. Advocacy groups are pushing for their voices to be heard in the decision-making process. This looming landfill crisis is not unique to Long Island—it reflects a broader national issue that should receive more attention. As landfill space runs out, regions will face mounting pressure to find sustainable, equitable, and scalable waste management solutions that balance environmental and economic needs. #WasteCrisis #LandfillShortage #EnvironmentalJustice #Sustainability #WasteManagement

PFAS chemicals are becoming increasingly prevalent in our environment and daily lives, earning them the nickname 'forever chemicals.' It’s crucial to understand where they’re found and how they impact us. These chemicals spread rapidly, making it difficult to control their reach. Long-term exposure is linked to serious health issues like liver damage, thyroid disease, obesity, fertility problems, and even cancer. Contamination in drinking water is particularly concerning since PFAS can accumulate in our bodies over time. ???Reach out to us today and learn how to eliminate PFAS while generating energy from wastewater sludge! #Environment #Health #ZrOWaste #PFAS.

Meer weten over ZrOWaste? www.zrowastegroup.com ‐----------------- Last couple of days we visited ZrO Waste Manufacturing in Louisville, Kentucky. We have been working with the engineering team for some time now on the development of their machine. 2 months ago we shipped our first electrical panel to the USA and now it was finally time to see it in action. We used our time to gain even more insight into the operation of the machine to further optimize. Fortunately, we were also able to combine the useful with the pleasant and we met several fantastic people. The highlight of the trip was the joint visit to the iconic Churchill Downs. The largest horse races have been organized in this gigantic stadium for 150 years. Want to know more about ZrOWaste? www.zrowastegroup.com #Kentucky #Flanders #FIT #WasteToEnergy

U.S. solar panel manufacturing capacity has quadrupled since the Inflation Reduction Act, surpassing 31 gigawatts, according to a Q2 report from the Solar Energy Industries Association and Wood Mackenzie. This growth, especially in the utility-scale segment, reflects a 59% year-over-year increase in installed capacity. The IRA has spurred the clean energy sector by providing tax incentives, leading to numerous domestic solar manufacturing initiatives. For example, NorSun has invested $620 million in Oklahoma, and Boviet Solar plans a $294 million facility in North Carolina, opening in early 2025. Despite this expansion, future growth may face challenges such as interconnection backlogs, equipment shortages, and labor constraints. New tariffs on solar components from Southeast Asia, effective this fall, may also create uncertainty. While impacts on utility-scale projects are expected to be modest, residential and commercial solar markets could see short-term effects, with predictions of a 4% decrease in residential installations and a 5% drop in commercial projects for 2025. #SolarManufacturing #CleanEnergyGrowth #InflationReductionAct #SolarTariffs

Ahold Delhaize USA, owner of Food Lion and Giant Food, is teaming up with General Mills to promote regenerative agriculture for wheat and oats, aiming to reduce emissions. ?? They’ll co-invest in farms using practices like cover cropping on over 70,000 acres in Kansas and Saskatchewan by 2025. This follows Ahold Delhaize's earlier project with Kellanova in North Carolina. The Ecosystem Services Market Consortium will oversee impact measurement and verify greenhouse gas reductions. ?? General Mills has already invested millions since 2020 to support Kansas wheat growers, benefiting producers, corporations, and consumers alike! ?? #SustainableFarming #RegenerativeAgriculture #ClimateAction #GreenEnergy

The push for domestic solar manufacturing in the U.S. is facing significant challenges, including high interest rates, labor shortages, and intense international competition. While solar energy is a promising solution for sustainable energy, its production implications raise concerns. Industry leaders warn that tariffs and government interventions can disrupt the supply chain, affecting not just module manufacturers but the entire industry. There is a growing recognition that the U.S. solar sector is heavily reliant on a limited number of sources for essential materials, which complicates efforts to compete against countries with lower labor and environmental standards. As the U.S. strives to strengthen its solar supply chain, the need for a skilled workforce also poses a hurdle. The Department of Energy's recent initiatives aim to address these challenges, but the path to a robust domestic solar manufacturing sector remains complex and fraught with competition. #SolarEnergy #CleanEnergy #ManufacturingChallenges #Sustainability #WorkforceDevelopment
