We are delighted to have successfully completed the installation of Australasia's first engineered materials system (EMAS) on our airfield. This is a $23 million investment in raising safety standards and is a testament to our commitment to providing world-class infrastructure for our community, travellers, and airline customers. We have a minimum runway end safety area (RESA) of 90 metres, but the EMAS provides the equivalent protection to a RESA of 240 metres. The project was logistically challenging, but it was finished on schedule and within budget as a result of excellent collaboration with our partners Runway Safe and Downer. From the initial earthworks to the installation of the 4,870 EMAS blocks, the entire project took 22 weeks. In total, more than 100 people worked on it, clocking up more than 100 night shifts. The EMAS was blessed by mana whenua representatives at an early morning ceremony last week. #QueenstownAirport #AviationSafety #Innovation #EMAS #ZQN Todd Grace Wayne Stiven Lydia Hartshorne

On Friday, we launched the new Queenstown Airport Community Fund. Administered on our behalf by the Wakatipu Community Foundation, the fund will distribute $50,000 in annual grants ranging from $1,000 to $5,000 to local charities and community organisations doing great work in the Queenstown Lakes and Central Otago districts. As a majority community-owned organisation, it’s important to us to give back. Queenstown Airport already contributes $150,000 through our annual partnerships programme; this new fund aims to extend our support further and help grassroots organisations to achieve their goals for our community. Applications are open from 3rd March to 7th April, and if your organisation is making a difference in our region, we encourage you to apply. For more details and the online application form, visit the Wakatipu Community Foundation’s website. Our Partnerships & Marketing Manager, Vanessa Hartnell, shares more about the fund: https://lnkd.in/guXzSwnU #QueenstownAirport #Community #Environment #Partnerships

?? Exciting milestone reached! We've finished the first phase of our airfield safety project at Queenstown Airport. Earthworks and other preparations for the installation of an engineered materials arresting system (EMAS) are complete, and our contractors and project team are now taking a well-deserved break. They'll be back in the new year to lay the EMAS blocks, which are designed to crush under the weight of an aircraft and bring it to a safe stop, should one overshoot the runway. We're proud to be the first airport in Australasia to use this gold-standard technology, which significantly increases safety for both passengers and the community.
