"Research?shows that diversity in the physician workforce improves outcomes for populations who have been marginalized: underrepresented physicians are more likely to?practice in underserved areas." Love this article published by the RWJF on why it's critical that, as healthcare organizations, we're not only thinking about how we can support diverse populations but the diverse care teams serving them. In our own programs that focus on safety net clinics, we consistently see higher rates of racially diverse providers than statewide averages, with 35% identifying as a minority and 30% reporting at least one social determinant of health. Our takeaway? The care teams of safety net populations are demographically reflective of the patients they serve. Which means if we want to keep these women in the workforce, we need to be attuned to their unique challenges and work proactively to deliver programs that meet their needs. Because, as Lauren Smith shares: When we embrace diversity, everyone benefits. #healthequity #socialdeterminantsofhealth #diversityinleadership

Imagine walking into a hospital or clinic where doctors, nurses, and public health professionals of every race, ethnicity, gender, disability status, and background are providing culturally sensitive and inclusive care. Ensuring our healthcare workforce mirrors the diversity of our nation is essential to our work at RWJF as we focus on dismantling structural racism and other forms of oppression that are barriers to health and wellbeing.??? ? In my first blog post since joining the Foundation, I share why diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in the health professions is critical to paving the way together toward a future where health is no longer a privilege for some, but a right for all. Research shows that physicians from historically marginalized communities are more likely to work in underserved areas and can improve important patient outcomes, like infant mortality rates. Studies also show that efforts to address racial inequities, such as those in maternal health, improve the health of patients of all races, ethnicities and backgrounds. As I’ve seen firsthand in my career, when we embrace diversity, everyone benefits.? ? That’s why RWJF’s Leadership for Better Health portfolio is increasing its investments toward a diverse healthcare workforce by 60 percent over the next three years. As we go all in on our commitment to DEI, we will take a systems change approach by investing in academic institutions that have made significant contributions to diversifying the health professions. We will also support groups of institutional change leaders and champions both within and outside academic healthcare settings who are dismantling racism in academic admissions and health professional training.?? ? President of Innsena; CEO of the Zorya Foundation; Host of the Health Tech Talk Show

I'm proud of the work we're doing at Zorya Foundation. I started Zorya with the goal of keeping more women in the healthcare workforce. Access to childcare is a social determinant, and improving that access with cash childcare grants is how we've chosen to reach our goal. Amanda W., our advocacy and research analyst, has been collaborating with Emma Nelson to analyze our impact across applicants and grantees. All of our applicants are employed in the healthcare workforce, and more than 80% have degrees, but: 45% experience food insecurity 40% report experiencing burnout 40% face transportation insecurity 41% are single parents We need to do more to support women in the healthcare workforce. Thank you to our huge community of donors for helping us do our part. Most of our donations are between $25 - $50, but every dollar donated from individuals goes directly to moms in need, and every dollar matters. Jaime Bland DNP, RN-BC Lisa B. Nora Cox Mandira Singh

Today is #WorldMentalHealthDay. At Zorya Foundation, we believe mental health is just as important as physical health. For #womeninhealthcare who may be struggling — You are not alone. We see you and we are here for you, without judgement. We believe women working in healthcare need and deserve support of all kinds, and Zorya Foundation can be an additional support and resource to you. Asking for help is not a weakness, it’s a sign of strength. ?? Reach out to us if you need an ear or need help navigating care systems — [email protected] ?? If you are in crisis—call, text, or chat online with the 988 Lifeline. ?? Please see photos for some great resources complied by Mental Health Coalition. (Additional resources upon request). This year’s #WorldMentalHealthDay theme is “Mental Health at Work.” As the World Health Organization notes, “employers have a vital role to play in supporting individuals with #MentalHealth conditions to thrive in the workplace.” In the healthcare field, where nearly 80% of direct care roles are filled by women, it’s especially important to prioritize mental health. 40% of the #womeninhealthcare who seek financial support from Zorya Foundation are dealing with mental health challenges and burnout. 40% is not a small percentage, and it is not an issue that will resolve on its own. In addition to rigid work schedules, women working in healthcare often feel overworked and under-paid, leading to high levels of socioeconomic stress and turnover. The emotional burden of working in healthcare is also unique, and often leads to burn out and compassion fatigue. So what can we do about it? ?? Employers in the healthcare sector — prioritizing mental health is in your best interest. Reasonable accommodations, specific to an individual person’s needs, can make a huge difference. Examples can include: flexible working hours, regular supportive check-ins, extra time to complete tasks, and extra support when returning to work after an absences. Additionally, fair compensation, family and parental leave policies, childcare support, and comprehensive benefits can also reduce socioeconomic stressors. Making workplace mental health a priority is not just important for your employees’ well-being, it will also make your organization more successful and productive. ?? A special shout out to mental health providers and clinicians making people’s lives better day in and day out. To say they do life-saving work is not hyperbole. It’s vital, admirable work, and Zorya Foundation is proud to support women working in behavioral health through our grant programs. #WorldMentalHealthDay #MentalHealthAtWork #MentalHeathAwarenessWeek #LetsTalkAboutIt Kat McDavitt Amanda W.

Thank you, Amanda W.! Your research and analysis has helped Zorya Foundation better understand the unmet needs of the women we serve, including 40% of our Zorya community experiencing mental health challenges and burnout (in part due to unmet socioeconomic needs). Thank you for highlighting your findings and raising awareness of these crucial issues. We are in this together. ?? #MentalIllnessAwarenessWeek

    Clinical Social Worker

I love digital health. The ability to impact individuals in a big way through the right products and policies gave me a job that, for a decade, kept things meaningful, challenging, and fun. But over time, I started to notice when (as a marketing person) we looked at the numbers, even the best platforms could do little to move the needle on health if basic human needs went unmet. Additionally, I saw the impact that organizations dedicated to addressing these social determinants of health (shout out to Enrique Enguidanos, MD, MBA and his team at CBCS as well as my family at Wellth... yes, you, Dinesh Joseph Apte) had on not only improving health outcomes, but bettering lives. I soon recognized that big change and big waves were made one person—one patient—at a time. So I became a social worker. The healthcare world is replete with literature on the impact that social determinants of health have on physical health outcomes—contributing to increases in chronic conditions, disease, and health complications. What we talk less about is the impact that these conditions have on something just as important: mental health. But the statistics are there, and just as impactful. Not just for patients, but for their providers as well. This #MentalIllnessAwarenessWeek, I encourage you to check out some of my research on the work that Kat McDavitt, Emma Nelson, and the Zorya Foundation are doing to reduce social determinants of health for the care teams providing for some of our country's most rural, underserved, and vulnerable areas. Not because I did it (even though I did!). Not to celebrate the organization (even though they deserve all the celebrating!). Not even because when two-fifths of women on care teams can't reliably feed their own families on their pay, how on earth can we expect them to stay and care for vulnerable patients in already underfunded safety-net clinics (because we shouldn't!). But because 40% of these women are experiencing mental health challenges and burnout, in part due to unmet socioeconomic needs. And there are things we can do to help—financially, legislatively, and when the doctor is double booked and we have to wait an extra 35 minutes to be seen. And tomorrow, while the world celebrates #WorldMentalHealthDay, I encourage you to remember that world mental health starts with individual mental health. (And that includes you!) ?? ?? https://lnkd.in/gCaPvY8Z

    Clinical Social Worker

Me... After my first long shift at the addiction clinic following the birth of my son. I was three weeks into my masters of social work program, two weeks into my journey as a first-time mom, and completely exhausted. So many people have asked how I managed a career transition, a masters program, and the birth of two kids all within a two year period. And I give them all the same answer: I have no idea, but I know I got really lucky with an amazing support system of strong women. I had professors who not only allowed me to bring my child to class, but were all too eager to hold him as they paced back and forth during lectures. (Social workers do love babies....Looking at you Kristin Lambert, DSW, LCSW, Mykenzie Hydo, and Dr. Angelea Panos). I had therapists and case managers at Wasatch Behavioral Health who cradled my infant during group therapy so that I could focus on leading and learning. And my husband had an amazing #ladyboss in Cheri Measom, CFP?, MBA who understood the importance of giving Chase the flexibility in schedule and work location that would allow me to be able to continue pursuing professional and educational goals with young kids at home. (A rare thing in finance!) But I know I'm an exception—not the rule. Especially in many sectors of healthcare where consistently long work shifts, lower pay for essential jobs, and high cost of initial and ongoing training force many women to choose between family and career. It shouldn't have to be that way. Which is why I'm thrilled to be joining the Zorya Foundation and their team of amazing (mostly) women who are tackling the barriers that women face in healthcare as their Advocacy and Research Analyst. From providing childcare grants to educational opportunities, one of the things I love about the work of Kat McDavitt and her team is that it impacts not only the healthcare providers they fund but the vulnerable populations they serve. Because when women lead, communities succeed. Some other lady boss shout outs who were so important... because the love just keeps going!
