Who was Zora Neale Hurston? ? A trailblazing writer, anthropologist, and folklorist who centered Black Southern culture and language in her storytelling. ? Best known for her novel Their Eyes Were Watching God, which remains a cornerstone of Black literature. ? A rebel in academia—she studied at Howard, Barnard, and Columbia but refused to let institutions define her worth. ? A collector and preserver of African American and Afro-Caribbean folklore, capturing Black oral traditions that might have otherwise been lost. ? A woman who insisted on living loudly, authentically, and unapologetically. At Zora’s House, we honor her legacy every day by creating spaces where Women+ of Color don’t have to shrink, assimilate, or conform.
