?? New Zoning Atlas report drop! ?? "Launching the Michigan Zoning Atlas: Report of the West Michigan Pilot," via Taubman College of Architecture + Urban Planning, University of Michigan, U-M Graham Sustainability Institute, Housing Next, & Michigan Association of Planning "A key value of the Zoning Atlas is in showing the consequences of the path of least resistance. The Zoning Atlas demonstrates the near-universal extent to which current zoning laws compel the most expensive type of housing, the least efficient use of infrastructure, and the steady consumption of pristine land even in the absence of population or economic growth. These troubling findings serve as the impetus to consider alternative land-use scenarios...which may allow communities to better achieve their housing and other goals." https://lnkd.in/eUS9xwYT

Don't miss two brilliant NZA analysts, Tara Safavian and Anthony La, at next week's UC GIS Week! Tara and Anthony alongside Catherine B. and Clancy McConnell, Ph.D. will lead a workshop discussing the methods used to build the California Zoning Atlas — one of the largest and most ambitious components of the National Zoning Atlas — completed in partnership with the UC Davis Center for Regional Change and Othering & Belonging Institute at UC Berkeley. The team will preform a demonstration on how to use the interactive map and compare jurisdictions within California and between states, and will conclude with an open discussion of policy implications, advocacy outcomes, ongoing challenges, and possible research questions. For more information and free registration, visit: https://lnkd.in/gP97UkTZ

What's the spookiest detail of your go-to horror flick? Is it the hook-handed slasher? The vengeful spirit? The suspiciously locked cellar door? What about...the #zoning? ?? A #Halloween ?? post on modern zoning in classic horror films ?? ?? ??? In Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1975), the crew meets their fateful demise after stumbling into Leatherface's home. His farmhouse, originally located in Round Rock, TX, sadly could not be built today as the district has since been rezoned to accommodate a Planned Unit Development. ?? The Central Park West apartments that played host to the witchy horrors in Rosemary's Baby (1968) are located in the UWS's real-life The Dakota. Though built before NYC adopted its comprehensive zoning code, the site's high-density R10A district aligns w/ the original buildings. ?? In The Exorcist (1973), few can forget the stairway where Father Karras plunges to his death, excising the demon once and for all. Visitors can traverse these steps in Georgetown, Washington, D.C. while enjoying the historic charms of the MU-4, Mixed Use district. ?? What's better than a haunted house? A haunted town! Or so would argue the Headless Horseman terrorizing the townspeople of Sleepy Hollow in the eponymous 1999 film. While the movie was not filmed on site, the real NY town honors its lore w/ a centrally located cemetery district. Looking for more lurid land use? Head on over to zoningatlas.org/atlas to explore our zoning data...if you dare. ??

This barrier to more and more affordable housing in NH -- zoning that requires big building lots for single family homes, almost everywhere in NH, means high land costs to begin with. That feels like a problem we can solve. TY Tina Lund Urbanomics, Inc. @ New Hampshire Housing Housing & Economy Conference today

This election cycle, local #zoning laws are in the spotlight as debates on housing policy dominate the national stage. The National Zoning Atlas demystifies the rules that lawmakers must understand in order to reimagine how we build at the local, state, and national levels. We encourage everyone to open the Atlas,?zoom into a small town, and then zoom out for more context to see how one place's zoning helps determine the conditions of whole housing ecosystem. ??? at zoningatlas.org/atlas CoStar News #housingpolicy #interactivemap #zoningdata https://lnkd.in/euEckruk
