Butler Window Restoration Update: Phase 1 is nearly complete The third and final wall has been built incorporating the iconic Butler Bricks at the base of the hill beneath the Butler Window. As Phase 1 nears completion, the Conservancy is raising funds to support Phase 2 of the project which will involve irrigation improvements, landscaping, and lighting to enhance the scene around the window. It was a lovely morning of celebrations at the RecognizeGood Say, Thanks Austin closing ceremony! City Hall brimmed with positivity, hosting a gathering of remarkable individuals dedicated to goodness. Heartfelt congratulations to all the Legends acknowledged for their invaluable service to the Austin community. In a standout moment, our beloved Judith Craft was awarded 3rd place, designating the Zilker Botanical Garden Conservancy as the recipient of her award. Throughout January, an astounding 84,000 acts of gratitude were counted during the Say, Thanks Austin campaign. Founded in 1924, the Violet Crown Garden Club celebrates 100 years of serving the community and sharing its love for gardening, floral design, and landscaping! Violet Crown Garden Club was one of the founding members of the Austin Area Garden Center (AAGC) in the 1950s and a key player in fundraising for the Garden Center at Zilker Botanical Garden in Austin, TX. Working with the city to bring this vision to life provided garden clubs with a place to meet regularly, hold events for the public, and continue volunteering at and funding a garden for the community to enjoy. This year, The Zilker Botanical Garden will join in celebration as it enters its 60th year in operation as a community meeting place in the heart of Zilker Park. #austintexas #zilkerbotanicalgarden #austinhistory #violetcrown

Butler Window Restoration Project | Where did the window come from? Austin’s Butler Mansion was commissioned in 1887 by Michael Butler, founder of the Butler Brick Company to be designed by Thomas Harding incorporating Butler bricks and Marble Falls granite. These same materials were used to build the State Capital. Butler bricks were Austin’s “original building blocks” utilized in constructing many significant buildings. Sold by the family in the early 1970s, the Butler Mansion soon was demolished, a sad but notable event that helped establish the Austin preservation movement. The Moorish-style arch, or keyhole window, was donated to the City of Austin and relocated to the grounds of the Zilker Botanical Garden in 1971, a result of the city’s faithful effort to preserve special architectural remnants and their accompanying stories. Butler Bricks will be used in the restoration project to maintain the original style and look of this structure. This endeavor has been made possible through generous supporters, to whom we express our deepest gratitude. In 2023, the Conservancy was honored to receive a grant from The Austin Parks Foundation, a testament to their commitment to preserving and enhancing our cultural heritage. Additionally, the project benefited from a generous donation from the Irish Consulate of Austin, further exemplifying the collaborative efforts to safeguard historical treasures. The combined support from these entities, alongside the contributions of our dedicated donors, plays a pivotal role in this project. This restoration not only preserves a piece of Austin’s history but also ensures that future generations will have the privilege of admiring this cultural gem. Butler Window Restoration Update: On December 20th, 2023, JTA Stoneworks broke ground on the Butler Window Restoration Project at Zilker Botanical Garden.?Fast forward to January 11th and the first granite wall is completed, with the second close behind. If you look closely, there is pink granite sprinkled throughout the Butler Window which was sourced from the same quarry in Marble Falls that these walls are made of. This granite can also be found in the Texas State Capital. Ultimately there will be 3 walls, forming a pedestal for the Window, which will stand at the center like a sculpture. Stone Mason Jon from JTA Stoneworks deserves recognition for his remarkable craftsmanship, as it is uncommon to find hand-chiseled edges and cuts in granite that create the illusion of a seamless, continuous stone wall.
