Please join us for Zero Waste Washington’s Speaker Series: Zero waste at wildfire camps, Hannah Johnson, 5-6 pm, June 18 (zoom): Tomorrow! In response to massive wildfires across the Western US, large base camps where firefighters work, eat, and sleep are established in rural communities. These sites have been the source of massive amounts of waste. Hannah Johnson and her team has come to the rescue. For the past 5 years, they have gone in to U.S. Forest Service fire camps to set up full zero waste systems, including recycling, composting, and waste reduction. This work has centered around developing relationships with the local community. The photos of before and after are amazing! They show piles and piles of throw-aways, and massive heaps of food waste (firefighters eat over 2000 calories per meal!). Details: Zero Waste Washington Speaker Series: Zero waste at wildfire camps, Hannah Johnson (founder of Perennial Zero Waste) Tuesday, June 18, 5-6 pm Via zoom RSVP (event is free, please rsvp to receive zoom link): https://lnkd.in/gkGP4GMb

Happy #GoodNewsMonday! ?? Did you know that in the Darrington School District, leftover cafeteria food isn't going to waste? ????? Instead, it's becoming a feast for local farmers' animals! ???? Embracing sustainability one meal at a time. Check out the heartwarming story below! Students in Darrington School District are turning food waste into a sustainable solution! Leftover cafeteria scraps are collected in bins labeled with playful pig illustrations, then picked up by local farmers to feed their animals, reducing landfill waste. Inspired by the initiative's success, other Washington state agencies are advocating for similar programs. Last month, producer Christopher Barnes from the Seattle Channel spent some time with the Repair Bank putting together this amazing feature. His segment truly captured the heart of our mission and the enthusiasm and generosity of our mighty volunteers. ?? ?? ?? Our operations are growing faster than we ever imagined and we are strengthened every day by the energy and encouragement of our supporters. New volunteers are signing up every day after hearing of our organization from friends who enjoyed their time with us individually or during a group event. Together we can reduce waste, keep furniture in circulation, and promote the skills of restoration and redesign all while helping our local community. Interested in donating to our nonprofit cause to help scale our operations and provide more support to community members in need?
