The livestream event will feature the good works of each company's Veteran Employee Resource Group and the potential to realize a greater impact through collaboration at the local level in 2025.

Honor, Courage, Commitment are core values that Marines live by. And that opportunity exists not just in uniform but as #Veterans. Last week I posted about Medal of Honor recipient, Colonel Paris Davis and how a person’s #character is not measured by their words, but rather in their actions. That same night I had a chance to catch up with Gold Star Mom, Janice Chance who embodies these core values and demonstrates character every day in memory of her son, USMC Captain Jesse Melton, who she lost in Afghanistan on Sept 9, 2008. Janice actively honors and remembers Jesse with her actions volunteering and serving with multiple nonprofits at the local level. She serves to preserve Jesse’s legacy by continuing to serve others and, for her, that work has made all the difference in her healing process. “When Jesse made his ultimate sacrifice in Afghanistan, I determined in my heart I was not going to drown in my tears or be paralyzed by my pain. We need to be a part of making a change in our society and making a difference in people’s lives.” Leadership matters. #Honor, #Courage, #Commitment, #Character — they matter. This 4th of 12 monthly snapshots from our“Year in Review”. We made connections to create a #Military Thriving movement, touching Boston, NYC, WI, MI and GA. We did this all while launching our first Military Thriving Live virtual event with 1500 Veterans, Military Spouses, and advocates joining us from all over the country. This photo was taken just a few minutes after our inaugural Military Thriving Change Forum at Georgetown. You can see the joy in our faces, and the bond we share as a small business and #unstoppable team. We’ve come to realize: there are a lot of big companies and big “nonprofits” — that call themselves “Military Friendly. Yet, they are far from it. In many cases, the end has become the means. and the greatest resource in those organizations, #people, have become expendable. We’ve seen some of the strongest, and most talented leaders in our Military-Vet community get laid off in “restructuring, downsizing and “at will” decisions. We’ve also witnessed some of those same organizations lose swaths of military talent, because of poor leadership and culture It was just a matter of time. In those situations, ZeroMils did what we do best. We acted - and we helped those #Veterans and #MilitarySpouses transition into more meaningful employment and work environments that recognized their true value. Don’t let organizations tell you they are “military friendly” when their actions say otherwise. Do your homework, ask questions, never settle and never compromise. We choose the companies and nonprofits we work for and support. Choose one that helps you grow and #thrive. #MilitaryThriving

This is #MilitaryThriving personified. And here is a reshare of Trish’s words last week when she first posted this photo. ————— “Headed overseas for Thanksgiving week but couldn’t leave without expressing my deep gratitude for our awesome team at ZeroMils The screenshot captures the moment I told the crew Brian and I were expecting a baby and the pure joy (and tears in Kevin’s eyes) is so evident from each of them, it’s been tough not sharing sooner! THANK YOU Kevin Paul Monica for your unrelenting support of my professional and personal growth since Day 1 of joining the team. I’m blessed to have mentorship and friendship with each of you. My only hope is every #milspouse finds a team like ours — where you’re valued, supported, and respected every single day. Living a #MilitaryThriving life with the greatest team!”

In April of 2020 at the height of COVID, I lost my nephew Christian - a first responder and father of 3 - to suicide. I’ve lost Marines to suicide — And I’ve lost friends, and friends of friends to this mental health crisis, which is endemic in our country and not unique to our community. I’ve also struggled myself with depression and mental health issues. The truth is: I was able to recover and find a path back to #thriving because of our strong connected community and the unwavering support of people I love and who love me -- Laura, Paul, and other friends and family. Yesterday was International Survivor of Suicide Loss Day — and a painful reminder that my nephew Christian would have been 33 in a few days. While many of the biggest organizations supporting the prevention of this unthinkable tragedy let the day go by without comment, our family brought together more than 450 people from the community I grew up in. We remembered Christian, along with several other First Responders, Veterans, and civilians who were tragically lost to suicide. The community showed up in force. With dozens of small businesses, service organizations, and nonprofits we wrapped our arms around survivors, embraced them, and sent an important message at the 5th Annual Survivor Day 5K. Building a community of support and sharing our own stories of struggles and challenges is the only way to reduce suicide. Don’t let anyone tell you as a small business or individual leader at the local level that you can’t do your part or make a difference. Yesterday was proof of that to me. ZeroMils’ pledge is simple. We will do our part. And our mission to create #MilitaryThriving cultures and communities will play a vital role in helping Veterans and our neighbors (in and out of uniform) fight stigma, build community, and drive better health outcomes.
