When used in fuel cells to produce electricity, hydrogen offers a game-changing solution for aviation by generating zero carbon emissions. The past decade has been transformative for the hydrogen sector, with recent years fueling growth through crucial financial support, research funding, and deployment initiatives. Key milestones include the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act and the FAA reauthorization, both of which contain provisions to advance hydrogen aviation. By 2050, hydrogen has the potential to reduce 16% of all U.S. CO2 emissions! Today is also a great opportunity to reflect on hydrogen’s impact at ZeroAvia—it's not only a key piece in the decarbonization puzzle, but it's also driving job creation across our locations. ?? We are leveraging hydrogen to decarbonize aviation, but how exactly are we testing fuel cells for this purpose? Take a tour of our Hydrogen Lab with Dr. Gareth Coates, Head of Power Generation LTPEM to find out more. To address the intricate challenge of testing fuel cells in an aviation setting, we established a specialized hydrogen fuel cell lab in Kemble. This cutting-edge facility was developed by an expert team led by Mitch Hiscock, Head of PGS LTPEM Rig Test, along with Daniela M. Agachi, Senior Fuel Cell Engineer (featured in the video), Gareth, and other talented colleagues. Testing fuel cells is a highly complex and technical process, but what makes our lab so unique is its capability to push fuel cells to their absolute limits. Here, we can run these cells at extremely high power outputs and simulate diverse conditions to ensure they perform optimally.
