?? Successful proof-of-concept Neuter/ DNA Aegina in 2024 ? 68% of OWNED #dogs #Neutered or #DNA sampled in our Proof-of-Concept in Aegina, which is by far the #largest #percentile across #Greece. ?? The number ONE source of acquiring a dog in Greece is, often, by unwantedly letting their, or a neighbor’s, or friend’s dog #have a #litter, which leads to a #supply and #demand #mismatch. ??Per Law 4830/2021, all owned pets must be either NEUTERED or provide a DNA sample to reduce unintentional, or intentional breeding. Dog and cat owners who don’t comply risk a #fine of 1,000€ as of July 1st 2025. In collaboration with the Aegina #municipality: ? Zero Stray Pawject conducted a large DNA/ Neuter #Awareness #Campaign between March and July 2024. ? Thanks to our work, the municipality texted & called hundreds of #owners to make them aware of the looming fine. ? To those who said they want to neuter, Ms. Hatzina, Director of #Public #Health offered a neutering subsidy. Thanks to the generous funding of Battersea , 104 additional owned dogs were neutered during the program. ? ZSP arranged for a visiting #veterinarian to take blood (DNA sample). 42 owners were enabled to give DNA from their dog as alternative. ?? Dog owners like the Aegina resident in the picture below. He wanted to stay #compliant, but his dog is very sick and cannot undergo surgery. He was so very #thankful that thanks to our work, his dog was DNA tested and he can now avoid a fine. ???????? The #RESULT: Aegina is the municipality in Greece that, in the national pet registry EMZS, has the HIGHEST percent of owned dogs that are neutered or have provided a DNA sample, which reduces #overproduction and the #creation of new #strays. #supplyanddemandmismatch #policy #proofofconcept #responsiblepetownership #microchip #neuter #giveDNA #zerostraypawject #zerostrayacademy #change

?? > 6,000 #data #points to generate #insights We are #analytically driven and rely on data to draw insights. In 2024, we launched various #surveys including longitudinal surveys with dog and cat owners and market research surveys in Greece: ? Only 21% of dogs are #purchased from a #breeder, #petstore or an individual other than a licensed breeder. Only 8% were imported. ? 1/3rd of dog owners acquired their dog through the #birth of their #own dog or a friend’s or neighbor’s dog, and 1/3rd picked up an #abandoned #dog from the #street, confirming the urgent need to enforce #neutering or providing #DNA to stop #overbreeding and #abandonment. ? A whopping 88% acquired their #cat by picking it up from the street. ? 55% of dog owners (majority) who do not want to neuter their dog claim that their dog resides in a #controlled #environment, however over 62% of #births are #accidental, which means that dogs form controlled environments escape and reproduce unplanned. ? ?? 976 Hellenic Police Officers Trained .. ... on their legal authority, responsibility, as well as the legally mandated obligations of pet owners. They were trained on how to respond to animal abuse cases. The training also exposed the linkage between #animalabuse and #harm to #humans. Our trainers also explained the critical importance of conducting #microchip #controls and focusing on #responsiblepetownership We extended and increased the scope of work with the #Hellenic #Police through a wider MoU with the new #Minister of Citizen Protection Michalis Chrisochoidis. Since May 2023, compared to the corresponding periods in 2021 and 2022, we have observed the following RESULTS: ? 140% increase in reported incidents ? 35% increase in case files ? 45% increase in arrests resulting into 344 arrests ?60% increase in administrative fines resulting in 2,406 administrative fines, amounting to €5,061,560. ?? We also started a pilot training program with the #Municipal #Police. ?? More is planned for 2025 as part of our newly signed MoU, including a larger proof-of-concept with the Hellenic Police. ?? Over 4,000 Owned #Pets #Microchipped ? With DNA samples required from unneutered pets in effect since January 2024, the microchip becomes the “#vaccine #against #strays”. The microchip has always traced an abandoned pet back to its owner. ? With DNA, authorities can now trace the owner of the parent of any potential abandoned offspring. ? We offered free (where possible) or almost free microchip subsidy programs in collaboration with municipalities. ? Over 4,000 owned pets will never be lost or abandoned. ?? 80 #Judges & #Prosecutors attended.. Our First #Judicial #Seminar was held in May 2024. Prosecution and Trial of animal abusers is still inadequate. All too often, extreme animal abuse is not prosecuted in #Greece, or if it reaches trial, abusers go free or get lenient sentences. The judiciary’s primary responsibility is to protect society from those who break the law. ? That is why, in collaboration with the #Supreme #Court of Greece, in the presence of the #President of the #Court, #Justice Ioanna Klapa-Christodoulea, and under the auspices of the #President of the #Republic, H.E. Katerina Sakerallaropoulou, we held our first Judicial Workshop. ? It was attended by 80 judges and prosecutors including 4 Supreme Court justices. ? Renowned national and international experts taught about the link between #animalabuse and #domesticviolence, sexual abuse, terrorism, and #organized #crime. Over the next week, we will be sharing some of our 2024 milestones with you before we update you on our plans for 2025: ?? 158 #Municipalities Graduated.. ..and were trained on how to end #pet #homelessness and what their obligations are under #animalwelfare #Law 4830/2021, in order to make communities safer and healthier with fewer stray #dogs and #cats and better welfare for #pets and #people. ? More #mayors and vice mayors than ever before attended our 5-week intensive Academy course in 2024. ? We increased #compliance with the companion animal welfare legislation by graduating municipalities by 17 p.p. from 55% in 2023 to 72%. ? We increased the number of graduating municipalities offering free #microchipping and #neutering for owned pets of vulnerable groups by 130% (microchip) and 90% (neuter) compared to 2023. Not every municipality provides the legally mandated free veterinary care for these groups yet, but we are working hard to get there. ? Influenced 94 municipalities to implement #stray #neutering (#TNR) programs. We still have a mountain to climb, but we are not at base camp any longer and are happy about the progress we are seeing. #education #changemakers #zerostraypawject #zerostrayacademy
