In an era where privacy regulations are expanding and becoming more complex, data mapping has emerged as a vital tool for businesses. By offering a clear understanding of how personal data is collected, processed, and shared, it simplifies compliance with laws like CCPA, VCDPA, GDPR, and others, while also mitigating privacy risks. Beyond its regulatory advantages, data mapping also enables better data management practices and helps businesses build trust with consumers. In short, it’s an investment in both compliance and long-term success.

The landscape of data privacy is evolving again, and the Rhode Island Data Transparency and Privacy Protection Act, set to take effect on January 1, 2026, is the latest US privacy law that businesses will need to comply with. This law introduces stringent requirements for businesses that handle the personal data of Rhode Island residents, aiming to promote transparency and safeguard consumer rights. Companies must start preparing now to ensure they meet the rigorous standards set forth by this legislation and avoid penalties for non-compliance. ZenPrivata has Rhode Island in its privacy platform.

The most egregious #data #privacyviolation news of the week... well, maybe the whole year: General Motors caught with it's hand in the "cookie" jar (no pun intended), and saying, they were collecting and selling this #consumerdata for millions of dollars to #dataaggregators because we "share the desire to protect consumers’ #privacy". From the article: "Texas’?complaint against General Motors?and its OnStar subsidiary says that beginning in 2015, the automaker sold its customers’ driving data to outside vendors, including LexisNexis Risk Solutions, Verisk Analytics and Wejo. Some of those companies then calculated a “driving score” for each customer and sold that information to insurers. G.M. collected millions of dollars from these deals through upfront payments and ongoing royalties, according to the legal filing." I asked Scott M. Schlimmer to weigh in with his thoughts: "This is a prime example of why it's smart for an organization to be transparent. If GM had been transparent and obtained proper consent, they wouldn't have this lawsuit on their hands. For #consumers who aren't interested in reading the 50-page data collection "disclosures" (aka everybody), I recommend using AI to summarize the disclosures and warn you if there's anything that potentially violates your #privacyrights. We have a similar tool at #ZenPrivata, called #VendorPrivacyManagement, that uses AI to summarize and grade #privacypolicies, since most of us don't have the time to read and understand all of the #privacy policies, like GM's, that govern our #personaldata." https://lnkd.in/egcG7jZR
