Why Nurses Have the Best Leadership Style

Last year, I had two seizures at home, and there was nobody there to comfort me. During the peak of my seizures, each time the ambulance came, it was always the nurses who provided me with the comfort I needed. Their presence and care were more than just professional; they were genuinely compassionate.

You need to understand that nurses embody one of the greatest leadership skills: empathetic leadership. They lead not with authority, but with empathy, making them uniquely qualified to handle crises and provide the emotional support that patients desperately need.

Having lived with epilepsy for nearly ten years, it has taken a toll on my body. It has been hard and tough trying to maintain good mental health. There is a constant fear that lingers within me, a fear that the next seizure might strike at any moment. This anxiety can be overwhelming and isolating.

However, in those moments of crisis, the comfort I received from each nurse was immeasurable. They didn’t just treat my condition; they treated me as a whole person. Their understanding and empathy provided a kind of comfort you cannot imagine unless you’ve been in such a vulnerable position.

When we see people suffer, our inherent ability to feel what they are going through is a crucial skill. This ability, which nurses exemplify daily, is what makes empathetic leadership so powerful. It’s not just about getting the job done; it’s about making people feel seen, heard, and understood.

We need to recognize and value the importance of this skill among us all. Empathy isn’t just a nice-to-have quality; it’s a leadership style that can change lives, offer comfort, and provide a sense of connection in the most challenging times.

In a world where efficiency and speed are often prioritized, the empathetic approach that nurses take reminds us of the fundamental human need for compassion. It’s a leadership style that doesn’t just address the symptoms but reaches out to the soul, offering comfort, understanding, and hope.

Most of the nurses understand and feel deeply the pain of patients. They're making the patients feel respected, supported and genuinely care for, every time when they come in contact with. They are one of the hardest working people between the workforce in UK.
